Williams Independence Day fireworks cancelled.

Posted by Glen - June 30th, 2011

Williams regrettably has to cancel the fireworks show because of forest conditions, according to Mayor Moore.

There is still plenty to do until the Independence Day parade at 4 pm. The Swap Meet will be open on the west end of the City next to the Court house.

You can take a private tour to the Grand Canyon with Marvelous Marv. He’ll get you back in time for the parade. Or you could celebrate with the animals at Bearizona. And the Williams Aquatic Center will be open.

Of course, you can just check out the many businesses along historic Route 66.

Death by rooster

Posted by Glen - February 8th, 2011

A freak accident at a cockfight is just one more reason why California should take a harder line on this inhumane ‘sport.’

An incident in Central California last week was so bizarre that the headlines it generated wouldn’t be out of place in a supermarket tabloid next to tales of alien babies and Elvis sightings: “Man Killed by Rooster.” More specifically, one of the feathered contestants in an illegal cockfight in Tulare County, armed with a blade attached to its leg, apparently stabbed 35-year-old Jose Luis Ochoa in the calf, and Ochoa was declared dead of “sharp force injury” two hours later.

This isn’t the first time someone has died in what is supposed to be blood sport for birds; last summer in Merced, two men got into an argument over a $10 bet, one pulled out a gun and killed the other, and the victim’s brother and another man allegedly beat the shooter to death. But aside from the question of whether cockfights are humane for humans, they raise serious concerns about whether the state of California is doing enough to discourage them.

Fears over bison lead to several more Montana bills

Posted by Glen - January 28th, 2011

HELENA, MT - Growing fears that wild bison will be increasingly moved to new locations in the state – on both public and private land – are leading ranchers and others to ask the Legislature for more restrictions on the divisive animal.

Three bills heard in different legislative committees were all partly reacting to news the state and others may move Yellowstone National Park bison to other areas in the state.

Ranchers and others in rural areas have become increasingly worried about the bison plans. They fear the bison will transmit brucellosis to their cattle.

Bison supporters argue the animals need more places to roam than just Yellowstone National Park.

Williams Christmas tree looms large.

Posted by Glen - November 22nd, 2010

The Williams Christmas tree towers over local businesses.

The Williams Christmas tree arrived today and was set up through the efforts of the City of Williams and the Grand Canyon Railway. The Grand Canyon Railway—also currently running the Polar Express—has volunteered to decorate and light the tree this year.

The Parade of Lights and tree lighting ceremony marks the beginning of Mountain Village Holiday in Williams which seems to grow larger each year. The Parade of Lights will begin at 7 p.m. running from 9th street down historic route 66 ending at 1st street. Most people set up around Safeway to make sure the candy does not run out.

Services for Lance Corporal Broehm expected to be large.

Posted by Glen - November 19th, 2010

The sign on the door of Twisters Soda Fountain and Ice Cream parlor--one of the Ten Best Places in Arizona to Eat according the the Arizona Highways--reminds everyone that establishments do have the right to reserve service to anyone. The sign also expresses the sentiment of the City of Williams concerning the West Borough Baptist Church.

Memorial services for Lance Corporal Matthew J. Broehm, killed while on duty in Afghanistan, will be held in Williams at the Williams Elementary School Auditorium. It was originally scheduled to be held at the Baptist Church on Grant street, but so many veterans plan on attending that it had to moved to the auditorium.

A funeral procession will start at the Williams Elementary-Middle School on Saturday beginning at 2 pm. The procession will proceed down 7th street to Route 66. It will travel down route 66 to Second Avenue, turn down to Railroad Avenue and then back to 7th street. The procession will return to the auditorium to celebrate the life of this young man. Some estimates show over 20,000 veterans attending the service

Matthew Broehm was a well-known, respected and loved member of the community of Williams.

Also attending with the willful agenda to put a blight on the affair are members of the Westboro Baptist Church from Kansas who “Thank God for IEDs,” according to their press release.

There is no protest permit ordinance in place and Mayor John Moore said that the city would not deny a permit anyway.

“This young man died so those idiots could have the right to protest,” Mayor Moore said.

Judge dismisses lawsuit concerning remains of Geronimo

Posted by Glen - August 11th, 2010

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by descendants of the Apache warrior Geronimo, who claimed some of his remains were stolen in 1918 by a student society at Yale University.

The lawsuit was filed last year in Washington by 20 descendants who want to rebury Geronimo near his New Mexico birthplace.

It claimed Skull and Bones members took some remains from a burial plot at Fort Sill, Okla., where Geronimo died in 1909.

Judge Richard Roberts last month granted a Justice Department motion to dismiss, saying the plaintiffs didn’t establish the government had waived its right not to be sued without its consent.

He also dismissed the lawsuit against Yale and the society, saying the plaintiffs cited a law that applies only to Native American cultural items excavated or discovered after 1990.

Skull and Bones is not officially affiliated with Yale.
